Routines, most especially spiritual routines as devotions, prayer, Bible reading or others we often call spiritual disciplines, can be routines that replace relationship with God. In one's effort to have a firm grip on reality by being disciplined and consistent one let's go on that relationship that the routine seeks to pursue. No longer is one concerned about His glory and renown, but he is already gloated over his own glory and renown as it is confined in self-directed virtues such as consistency, determination, etc.
Virtues can be vices for a Christian if they are not in the context of the gospel, of being anchored in the Gospel, of being consciously anchored in the Gospel. The reason why it becomes a vice is because of the menacing effect it does to our soul. There can be a certain emptiness in these if it is done for their own sakes, or forget that they shouldn't be done for their own sakes.
The virtues to be truly helpful to the soul has to be done in grateful obedience. With grateful one considers relationship with Someone who has been benevolent to him; with obedience one ropes in authority and accountability. The "grateful" assures grace, praise and worship in the divine work. The "obedience" assures identification with the divine testimony. The grateful brings in reflection on the gospel; "obedience", on the law.
