Train Yourself to be Godly | John Ricafrente Pesebre
The Koine & classical Greek word for "training" is the noun GYMNASIA. The root is from the verb GYMNAZO. It really looks like GYM because that is really where we get the word, and it is a pretty old word used even by Aeschylus circa 5th c BC to mean the same up until Paul in the 1st century BC till today. Paul uses it here and in the previous verse either as a reference to athletic training or the boring repetitious practices of monks. In any of both cases, the idea is to labor to train repetitiously subjecting the natural survival instinct to avoid pain (and not to pursue pleasure) to work despite the pain, as in gym training ("no pain, no gain"). Elsewhere, Paul seems to allude to this by "I beat my body" suggesting a discipline by hardship (1 Cor 9:27).
Positive psychology and neuroscience (esp on brain plasticity) have scientific support for this practice.
I don't like this "training" thing coz I'm just lazy but because of the lordship of Christ, what a privilege to have membership at the Jesus Gym right at History of Redemption Avenue.
"Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train [GYMNAZE] yourself to be godly." - 1 Timothy 4:7
